Prior to 1972 when the park was acquired by the county council, Marlay Park was actually privately owned. Some buildings date back 300 years including Marlay House. The small craft stables are housed in the 18th-century stable yard. There is also a farmers’ market held at Marlay Park each Saturday and Sunday. The park is also a hub for wildlife including foxes, hares, bats, badgers, butterflies, and hedgehogs as well as a number of stunning peacocks.

The parkland comprises mostly woodlands, ponds, and walks that are perfect for a peaceful day in nature. There are also a number of recreational spaces occupied by a nine-hole, par-three golf course, tennis courts, six soccer pitches, five GAA pitches, a cricket pitch, two children's playgrounds, and a miniature railway.

Marlay Park is mostly famous for hosting Summer music concerts and festivals. The Longitude Festival is hosted in July, which started in 2013, as well as other individual artists that include The Stone Roses, Radiohead, Muse, Green Day, Kanye West, and Metallica.
